Purpose

Mirror World is a virtual reality game about a special ops’ (“player”) journey through a portal that allows him/her to co-exist inside the simulated mind of a designated character. Players will have access to the subject’s point of view, memories, feelings and thought processes.

Purpose

The intent is for the player to understand how the subject thinks and feels as well as to explore how these thoughts and feelings were formed, in a controlled environment, so that their learnings can be translated from the simulation and applied to the real world to define strategies that will affect the subject’s real-world decisions and insightfully re-shape their behaviours.

Some games and game mechanics that have inspired Mirror World include:

Here are a few interactive fiction games we played and reviewed this week:

Darknet

Genre
Cyberpunk Puzzle
Platform
VR (Desktop, Mobile)
Synopsis

A black hat enters cyberspace and steals data by hacking it before the signal can be traced.

Influence on Mirror World

In a previous iteration of Mirror World, a host’s (a.k.a. subject) memories, were displayed as network nodes, much like you see above in the screen capture from Darknet. A host’s thoughts would travel the connection path to their memories. If a player selected a mapped connection, they were able to strengthen it, influencing the host’s inclination to travel that very pathway. Ultimately, the discovery was that it didn’t present enough of a challenge to the player. Although we are still using the concept of memories and connective pathways in our gameplay to influence the host, we are now exploring new mechanics like those found below in InMind.

Inmind

Genre
Action Education Puzzle
Platform
VR (Desktop, Mobile)
Synopsis

Journey into the patient's brain and hunt down the neurons causing mental disorder.

Influence on Mirror World

InMind in-game players have been shrunk to a micro level and are able to travel inside a patient’s body on rails, liken to a rollercoaster, searching for red neurons denoting compromised cells. Like InMind, Mirror World players use a gaze mechanism to interact with a person’s mind. However, instead of targeting neurons, Mirror World players possess a mind and collect/position “blocks” in pathways that lead to various memories. By placing blocks in pathways you can divert the host's focus on particular memory. Mirror World players have control over where they move and they are encouraged to explore. This is useful because a player’s goal is to manoeuvre various test outcomes to determine the best one for a situation.

Murdered: Soul Suspect

Genre
Detective Adventure Horror Supernatural 3rd Person
Platform
Console PC
Synopsis

As Ronan O'Connor, a Salem Detective, you are fatally wounded during an encounter with the "bell killer". You fail to crossover because of unresolved business. Explore the town of Salem and battle demonic spirits as you try to solve your own murder case and cross over.

Influence on Mirror World

“Murdered” uses both ghost and possession mechanics; players can read minds, influence decisions and/or peek through the eyes of the living to uncover clues about the main character’s death. In MIrror World, we also play with the mechanics of possession. When possessing the host, the Mirror World player can view their memories, divert their attention from particular memories, see the world through their point of view and influence them to perform certain actions.

Her Story

Genre
Police Procedural Detective
Platform
Desktop Mobile
Synopsis

Search and sort through the database of clips to solve the case of a missing man.

Influence on Mirror World

In this interactive movie game, players search a database of clips to solve the case of the missing man. Her Story uses hundreds of short video clips from police interviews of with a woman. The player uses keywords to search the database to view another clip and uncover more of the story.

In Mirror World, a host’s memories are live action clips/still images that link the core narrative together. Like in Her Story, we encourage exploration to uncover the story. Players will go from one memory node to another through connecting pathways as discussed above in Darknet. The host's thoughts will also be traveling through these pathways. The player's goal is to divert the host's attention from certain memories so that they can control/shape the memory narrative recall.
